Also, I find the editorial notes patronising to Pigafetta and they are often more intrusive than helpful. This is an incredible first hand account of Magellan’s voyage. I’d flip to the back to see what Pigafetta was talking about, often to be told that this was a common European trope; instead of explaining the significance, it just listed other people who claimed the same thing.

Pigafetta’s own text, while well-annotated by the editor, is atrocious–as atrocious as Magellan and his crew in their treatment of the peoples encountered in the circumnavigation.
The negative aspects tended to come through more, especially in the notes. Refresh and try again. However, it is frustrating how Pigafetta glosses over so many of the hardships and that he barely acknowledges Sebastian D’Elcano, the mutineer mundk navigator who gets them home to Spain.
