I’ve just finished reading your review of “Baltasar and Blimunda”, which I loved!! I am definitely wanting to read more Saramago as I really liked this one.
Her search is unsuccessful, and she even kills a friar who tries to rape her. The plot of Baltasar and Blimunda is, like life, both simple and complex at once.

Truly one of my most enjoyable hose in a very long time. This iconoclastic novel, daring in its style and form, full of irony, spares neither the throne nor the altar. As in the typical Saramango style, there is a mixture of reality, history, fantasy, humor, and endless descriptions of contextual facts and surroundings.

He meets a young woman in magnificent Lisbon, by the name of Blimunda, not the most romantic, enjoyable blimundaa, her disturbed mother, found guilty of heresy, is being exiled to Angola, in Africa, but first, a public flogging, seen by thousands of curious people, she will never return home, it’s the time of the Inquisition.
Bartolemeu Lourenco, who has become irrational, flees into the wilderness and drops out of the narrative. Baltasar has been trying hopelessly, to get a government pension, in the city, with the help of Padre Bartolomeu Lourenco, a historical figure, known as the “Flying Man”, because he was building a fantastic, flying machine, the young King is strangely supporting this bold endeavor.
Baltasar and Blimunda is a love story so it is a good book for Valentine’s Day. The man is Baltasar a soldier who lost his left arm during Portugal’s battle with Spain. And with a dash, “How good to have those philosophical debates on long journey.
In the latter he discovers while studying in Holland that what can make the airship go is human will. It is an 18th-century love story intertwined with the construction of the Convent of Mafra, now one of Portugal’s chief tourist attractions, as a background.
